![]() ![]() Knowing the truth might actually be worse than not knowing, and may lead only to disappointment and regret. How much is Lara willing to sacrifice to find it? It's a valid question specifically because of what actually awaits her. The game then proceeds to give warning after warning that digging up forbidden knowledge might have consequences. It's the truth she's after first and foremost, whatever it may be. It should've been obvious: at the start, she states plainly that she holds no illusions about what she'll find about her mother. And most importantly: Lara herself is apparently more mature than I was during my initial playthrough, because it would seem I totally missed the point. The dialog is excellently written and voice acted, and the cinematics (directed by Toby Gard himself) are impressively expressive and fluid to this day. It really was more Legend greatness from start to finish.Ĭheck out that cinematic lighting and texture detail!īut the thing that really gets me is how much character the game has. I also enjoyed the environments and puzzles more than Anniversary. While I revisited the game from time to time, I never made it past Thailand again. I think it was this ending that left me carrying a mediocre impression of Underworld all these years. I mean, what's up with that? What about their rivalry? What about justice?! The "search for mother" melodrama was starting to feel a bit overdone, and for it to end up leading to nothing more than an animated corpse (just standing there!) felt like an insult to all of Lara's (my) efforts. However, I wound up feeling pretty disappointed in the end. I played Anniversary, but as a direct continuation of Legend, Underworld is what I really wanted. I was aware of the series before and dabbled in some PS1 demos, but Legend was the game that sucked me in (and consumed wayyyy too much of my attention as a teenager. ![]() So, I first discovered Tomb Raider during the LAU trilogy.
